Diamond Head: Get There at Six or Skip It
Diamond Head: Get There at Six or Skip It
At ten AM this is a conga line of sunburned tourists in flip-flops. At six it's a volcanic crater waking up in silence with the first light turning the tuff walls gold. Same trail, completely different experience.
1.6 miles round trip, 560 feet of gain. Switchbacks, then 99 stairs cut into the rock, then a dark tunnel, then a spiral staircase inside a WWII bunker, then the open summit. The view covers the whole island: Pacific to the south, Waikiki's towers catching morning light to the west, the Ko'olau Range to the north, the coast toward Hanauma Bay to the east.
$10 to park inside the crater, free if you walk from the bus stop. First entry at 6 AM. Bring water, actual shoes, and your phone flashlight for the bunker. Be down before nine.
